Should Santa Monica College Continue to Expand Its Facilities?
"Expansions, including the Bundy campus, the Broad Theatre complex, and the Academy of Entertainment and Technology have occurred despite faculty, staff, student, and community concerns about these projects.
The Student Services Building exists as no more than a computer-generated image and fenced-up hole on Pico since the groundbreaking 5 years ago (original projected completion: 2013). Also consider the Liberal Arts building, built in 1952 and heavily damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Both the 1998 SMC Career and Educational Facilities Master Plan and the 2012 review of the SMC Capital Outlay Program called for demolition. However, the original building still stands more than 15 years after it was initially slated for removal, and today its 'poor functionality, low technology, and low efficiency' rooms contain Psychological Services, the Assessment Center, and the Veterans' Office, among others. Additionally, classes are still being held in these substandard rooms lacking adequate window treatments, air conditioning, and updated technology-all items serving to undermine a student’s success.
The discrepancies in the above building plans suggest that before additional expansion occurs, the College needs a revised and more carefully prioritized plan that meaningfully takes into account both College needs and the surrounding community concerns and views." Oct. 1, 2014 Dennis C.W. Frisch
"There are a number of capital programs at SMC; they are not focused on 'expansion'. We are still replacing buildings that were rendered unsafe due to the earthquake (multipurpose room at the Performing Arts center) and adding value to the community – Broad Stage. We have completed a number of adaptive reuses (Bundy and the library are great examples). We continue to replace temporary buildings and those beyond their usefulness. We will be redoing the frontage of Dresher Hall to be more neighborhood focused. We are building a chiller facility on campus that reduces electric bills and is more environmentally friendly. We insured that Emeritus has a home. KCRW is getting a new home on the AET site and finally moving out of the basement that they describe during the membership drives. While expansion is not an agenda of mine, there are situations where expansion is critical to the educational mission of the college. One such example and a project that I have been working on, as a member of the Malibu Santa Monica Joint Powers Authority, for a number of years is the Malibu Center – Malibu deserves a unique location to better serve its community." "With the exception of building a new campus in Malibu that will be a wonderful new resource for the community and the college, SMC has no plans to 'expand.' We will however continue to need new or upgraded facilities. We still have 'temporaries' on several campuses and definitely need a new Math Complex. I expect that over time, replacement buildings and renovations will be built on the campus properties we already own --- infilling rather than expanding SMC's footprint.
SMC has several major new facility projects in the works right now including information technology; central plant; health, physical education, fitness, and dance; and student services buildings on the main campus; a new east wing on our Performing Arts Center campus, and several new buildings including a new home for KCRW at our Academy for Entertainment and Technology." "SMC should expand facilities and ensure that the buildings are earthquake retrofitted to ensure that students, faculty and staff are safe. Any expansion should engage local residents and neighborhood groups to ensure that future construction is done in a collaborative manner with respect for residents." Oct. 1, 2014 Maria Loya
"I believe that SMC should continue to provide to its students and residents an environment on its campus that is welcoming and inviting. A place where students can learn and the community can use as needed. I am very excited about the campus center that is in the process of being built in Malibu. It will allow our residents in Malibu the opportunity to take courses without having to drive into Santa Monica.
Any expansion of facilities should only happen if and when the College goes through a transparent process that would engage the residents of Santa Monica and Malibu." Oct. 1, 2014 Barry A. Snell
"We need to plan our development carefully to address the concerns of our neighbors and the residents of Santa Monica. On the main campus, we are not adding buildings but simply replacing older facilities. Any expansion will take place on our satellite campuses, and only in very limited ways. We are building a new small campus in Malibu in conjunction with the city of Malibu and the county. We are expanding the Arts and Entertainment Academy on Stewart Street. And we are adding a new wing to the Madison campus, but it is a very limited development." Oct. 1, 2014 Andrew Walzer
